Going the Extra Mile….

Has your luggage ever been lost on a flight?

Recently lost luggage made headlines. Not because it was lost but because of what one airline worker did to make sure it was found by its owner.

This past week a mother of three who is battling stage four colon cancer lost her luggage on a flight. She spoke to the airline worker and explained exactly why she needed the luggage and needed it that evening due to her illness. The worker promised her she would have it couriered over to her hotel upon arrival.

Yet, when it arrived the courier service had already closed for the night. Knowing the women needed the luggage she took it from the airport and drove out of her way to deliver it herself.

The worker did not have to do that and could have easily blamed it on the airline or courier company but instead at 11pm she got in the car and went the extra mile to make sure the courageous cancer fighting mom had what she needed.

In my mind the airport worker not only went the extra mile but in so many ways described Christian character. What the airline worker did was not heroic or probably even newsworthy but it was the right thing to do and the caring thing to do.

In the book of Galatians Paul encourages the church to not miss an opportunity to do good. He writes, “So then, whenever we have the opportunity, let’s practice doing good to everyone, especially to the family of faith” Galatians 6:10.

This week I invite each of us to look for the places we might show God’s love by doing good and going the extra mile knowing that when we do a small piece of heaven is found on earth!

See you on Sunday!
