This week many of us have seen horrifying images of Hurricane Harvey’s destruction. The one that has touched my heart the most is the picture of a baby floating in a plastic tub. (See picture below.)
Maybe it is the fact that I have been reading Exodus a lot for our sermon series but I immediately thought about baby Moses when I saw this image. Instead of a woven basket we see a 21st plastic tub and a baby swaddled in safety from the harsh world that she has found herself within. The baby in the picture looks perfectly content and does not realize what is going on around her. In the midst of oppression caused by rising waters the baby is kept in care.
Moses too was protected and sheltered from the harsh realities of his world and his people. We read later in Exodus when Moses learns how other Hebrew people were treated he was so upset and angry. God gave him a way to take responsibility and be used by God so that all might know the liberation given to Moses.
A song you will hear this week in worship is called, “Modern Day Moses” (the lyrics are below). The song speaks of each of our calls to be part of God’s liberating work in this world!
This week may each of us remember God’s great protection in our lives and work towards the liberation and protection of all who surround us.
See you in worship this week!
Modern Day Moses
By: Kendall Payne
A modern day moses, waking the streets
With shouts of glory, blistered feet
Hes met the maker, he’s met the reason he’s alive
And he’s on fire inside
A modern day mother, living in the slums
Feeding the hungrey, making sure the race gets run,
Always asking if we fought with steady feet
She fights on her knees
Let my people go
A modern day martin in a world of civil words exchange
But dreaming bigger, he thinks maybe he could make a change
Hes heard the stories, he wants some of his own
And he’s not alone.[Bridge:]The time is not the moments here, walk in faith or stand in fear
Change the course of history, did you ever think
No one ever though — who would have believed?
Let my people go
A modern day me what have I become, what can I be?
If there is greatness out there to be acieved
I want to be more than someone who just passes through this lige
I want to stand up for what is right
