Can you name four restuarnts and five buildings within two blocks of the church?
Most of us cannot….
For this reason we as a church are putting intentional efforts to being a church in downtown and for downtown! We do this through our breakfast club ministry as we now have formed a speical relationship with the homeless and a few volunteers.
Yet, downtown is also full of people that live in the buildings around us. We as the church are called to reach out to them and be God’s presence of love and grace in their lives as much as we are called to ministry with the homeless.
Over the past two years we have begun, Yoga Chapel, a prayer service based around the practice of yoga. We have come to know more students through this service and have connected more to the love of God. We have also begun testing a weeknight service. We are excited that after two years of this work we are able to bring someone on full time to continue in an intentional way the work the church has been doing for years!
We will welcome, Kipp Nelson, to our staff and community this Sunday, July 2nd! Kipp is coming on board to be our minister of Outreach and Evangelism! His main responsibilities will be the oversight of the Breakfast Club, connecting the church with the Downtown community, and providing opportunities for deeper connection through small groups and Bible study in Miami!
Kipp was born and raised in Birmingham, AL, and is a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Auburn University. After college, Kipp spent two years working with a United Methodist campus ministry and serving as a student pastor of four rural churches in Auburn, AL. Kipp recently graduated with a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He has worked in various ministry settings, including rural and urban churches, several youth groups, a vibrant college ministry, and two new church starts. Kipp is most excited to live in a diverse community and learning from each person’s story! He looks forward to working with FUMC and continuing the discernment of how God is calling us to serve the downtown community!
Make sure to be in worship this week to show Kipp a BIG FUMC welcome!
